Playing Spartans

Blog … Spartens Rugby Sunday 7 sept

Great day great match. We travelled over to the Spartans ground (Spartans Rugby Club is situated by the junction of the A446 and Coppice Lane which is a quarter of a mile on the Coleshill side of the A 453 at Bassetts Pole.)
This promised to be better match than some of the earlier matches this season as the two teams were far more evenly matched.( insertPhotos)

It was a great match and after a slightly shaky start Vipers took control and the tries started coming. Nat scored Vipers second try barrelling through the opposition like the great big elephant he so closely resembles.

Vipers won the match ………….to ……………

Afterward the kids were fed and watered and then we stopped at the local McDonalds for lunch before driving home.

Thank the Lord for Yanks

Well who’s a clever girl then? Thank you Dianne of Occ??? Florida USA for your clever software finding skills. Yes we have solved the PC hard drive mystery and all credit goes to my fine friend in the land of the free. Readers may recall that I had no disk space on my PC hard drive but couldn’t find what it was that was taking up all the room. Well my clever Yankee friend came riding over the hill like the cavalry do so often in their strange US cowboy films and provide the software to answer that query and solve that problem. After trying everything else I downloaded and ran TREE>>>>? And 2 minutes later discover and deleted the rouge package that was hogging my hard drive space. I now have 700+ Gigabytes of HD back and it’s all down to her … Well done DI.

While I was doing the above the was a knock on the door from the Postman who had a parcel addressed to Hannah. Being busy I just glanced at it and put it away in case it was for her birthday of some such. Only later when I woke did I realise that this too was from DI and were some presents she’d bought for Hannah during her recent trip to San Francisco and Yosemite Park. So once again thank you Di.

F**KING PC Hard Drive

OK God (although you’re not there) what the fuck is it with me and new PC. Have I offended you so much that you always chose to fuck over my PC as a sign of you displeasure and wrath? Anyway, why the fuck is my PC hard drive showing as full no matter what I do. I have transferred virtually every file off it to external hard drive but no matter what I do 5 minutes after being told I now have 100 gigabytes free I get a message saying low disc space and discover that I now have only a few megabytes remaining. If I’ve been botted by some hacking bastard I’m gonna go mental. Looks like gonna have to return PC to PC World and ask them why the hell it’s telling me my hard drive is full when it isn’t. oh just been advised to check out a windows forum and possibly problem is stuff held in temp files.
On a good note I managed to install and run the software that allowed me to connect the old video camera to the PC and learn how to copy the film from it to the hard drive. Due to the aforementioned hard drive problems this was more of an academic exercise as there wasn’t the space to actually store the uploaded film.

Hannah School and Nathaniel Queen's Scout Award

I booked the night off because today we had to go to Brockington and meet Hannah’s class teacher Mr Aggio(?) to discuss briefly, in fact very briefly as it turned out,  how she was settling in and if there were any problems we needed to be aware of. Everything was fine she has settled in well is doing well academically and had started taking part in other school activities (she’s singing a solo at the Harvest festival service)
Afterward we were due to attend at Scouts HQ in Blaby (insert photo) to see Nat and some of his friends receive their Queens scouting certificates along with other scouts from around Leicestershire. On the way there we dropped Hannah off at Darren’s house as she had her own scout meeting that night then drove to HQ. The presentation went well and Nat managed to be quite humorous when he was called to receive his certificate (insert vid)

Looking Back Over The Past Week

Seeing as I no longer appear to be able to write something everyday I thought perhaps I should at least try and do a weekly summary if only as an aide memoir to aid my memory when, if I’m lucky enough to live that long, I reread them in my dotage.
The problem was I got addicted to Twitter and spent all my save work time there rather than keeping this journal up to date. Added to that WAS THE FACT THAT I LEAD A VERY UNINTERESTING LIFE SOMETHING I AM COMING MORE AND MORE TO REGRET so had very little new or interesting to say. I would have written about the family but it appears that providing me with as little as a series of headers describing their activities is too far far too much to ask or expect. The problem is this; whilst I have little of consequence to write I have come to enjoy the act of writing itself and so find myself in something of a quandary. I want to write but have fuck all to write about in fact see how many times I’ve just managed to repeat myself and undoubtedly I’ll do so again in a moment when I bemoan how my desire to write is restricted by my lack of things to write about … ably done there sir you played a blinder. Thank you fictional observer I must agree that in fact I most certainly did play a blinder and made this sentence unnecessarily long by my fulsome acknowledgement of the well deserve praise that you my fictional friend have just heaped upon me. Ok just came out of an uncomfortable whatsapp conversation and my attempts at provide my imaginary reader with lots of humorous repartee may be somewhat diminished.
Oh one thing of note; I think my time as a Governor ended tonight because I sent an email to the secretary querying why I was still receiving documents when so far as I was aware my term of office ended in August of this year and as I no longer have kids at the school I’m no longer eligible to stand for re-election as a parent Governor. Anyway I was never very much of a Governor because I wasn’t sure where the line was between supervising and interfering and opted too much on the side of caution and spent far too little time at the school. Needs new blood; new parents new governors who aren’t afraid to stick their noses in … especially now what with the school going through the process of becoming an academy. I probably, change that to certainly, could have been a much more hands on governor and done more but my learned reticence (I used to be more confident for a short part of my life) held me back as it always seems to do. I was convinced that the teachers knew far more than I did because they were the professionals and it was my place to listen not to tell.

Anyway didn’t this start out as a retrospective and so far we’re 500 words in without so much as a hint of a retro so far being seen or heard from..

Last Week: I had a shitty cold and I though my head was going to explode. I was off work on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday but still had the headache as late as Saturday night. All in all it was an uneventful (even for me) week accompanied by a great deal of pain. Deb was also poorly as she was still getting over the malaise she infected me with but on a positive note at least the kids didn’t succumb to the dreaded lurgi too.

Think that’s about everything:

Oh Nat got 100% in a maths exam and Hannah got picked to sing a solo at the Brockington Harvest Festival and Deb applied for a job at Brockington. I downloaded and put even more books on my kindle including The Great Undead War (http://www.amazon.co.uk/By-Blood-Heroes-Great-Undead/dp/0062048759/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349227989&sr=8-1) PIC (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QI2mxOlXL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU02_.jpg)which is basically the First World War with Zombies and weird as that sounds I really rather enjoyed it.
The trick was making the zombies incidental and placing the focus on the interactions between the normal humans and the revenants (the undead that came back with full knowledge of their previous lives) with the zombies just the backdrop horror show.

I’m sure lots of other things happened to the Deb, Nat and Hannah but as they haven’t told me what those things were I can’t record them here for posterity. So future grandchild if you are reading this and wondering what your granddad or grandma were up to this week back in 2012 go give them a good kicking and tell them that Great(?) Granddad said “told you so” and ask them why they were to lazy to spend a few minutes telling me.
Oh when I returned to work the system for keeping track of calls had changed. There is no longer a board recording how many calls are queuing to get through and when you log on to the tel-set there’s no figure there either. There could be a 1,000 or there could be one. If there is more than one the tel-set rings and you take the call. When you finish and go into ready same thing happens again … either it rings or it doesn’t and if it does you still have no idea how many people are trying to get through. I really can’t decide if I like it better this way or not. Certainly the pressure of 500 calls in queue is gone but equally one has no idea how much longer one has left before one breaks the back of the queue and there starts to be, gradually longer and longer, gaps between calls. It’s swings and roundabouts or even, dare I say it, Panda’s Paws Panda’s ears!!!
It’s really such a shame I can think of another 16 words to say about last week because if I could I’d cross the 1,000 word barrier … Oops seems I did anyway although I just realised that I’ve got to write a little more because the word count added in the links which of course wont be there when this is posted but I’m fairly certain I’ve now written enough. Saddler's Wells Theatre: Theatretrain 2012

We were up for an early start as Nat had a Sunday paper round to complete before we left (Mum did it) and we had to be at Brockington college by 8.00am at the latest if we were not to miss the coach to Saddler’s Wells.
Well, needless to say (So why am I saying it? I don’t know why you are saying because if I don’t know one will know what it was that was needless to say innit) we were parked up and at the school gates shortly after 7.30.

As always I’d been unnecessarily called away from the lavatory we before I’d needed to be. There is no justice!!!

Nat an I were anxious to obtain for ourselves a double seat each and with a certain a mount of glaring and snarling we dissuaded anyone else from trying to sit next to us. If there had been a table I might have been tempted to follow Ben Elton’s advice for obtaining a double seat on a train and taken out and plonked my Willie down on it.

I listened to sundry podcasts and read my Kindle and Nat did similar. Deb and Hannah chatted (girls ah!) and the time shot by. A pleasant, but seemingly unnecessary, stop at previously unknown services was a surprise but quite why we stopped when we were little more than a half an hour from out destination still eludes me.

However it was opportunity to see a new an unknown stop and grab a Starbucks.

Shortly after we entered London and were on our way to Saddler’s Wells. Along the way I snapped photos of various landmarks and uploaded them to WhatsApp and Dianne in Florida. Next time, should there be one, I’ll snap the pictures in the camera application and upload later because the WhatApp app automaticall restricted the picture size.

We arrivesd outside SW at approximately 10:45. The kids were de-bussed and accounted for before being marched off for a ful day’s rehersal before the show started at 7:00pm that evening.

With Hannah safely taken care of I fired up the mapping application on my N8 and found the route to the British Museum.

Note how I like to photograph PUBS because I can't afford to actually use them!!!

We made it there in about 45 minutes having gone wrong just the one time when I’d shut down the mapping application and we inadvertently passed the street we should have turned at. As a result of this slight oversight we arrived at the British Museum from slightly the wrong direction but with no harm done.  At one point we passed a bus emblazoned with the slogan “Modern Science Proves That God Exists” (yeah of course it does…Doh)

which I presume was the believes answer to the infamous atheist bus add a few years back that, I believe, originated in London

It was a beautiful day perhaps the warmest of the year and certainly the closest we got to a summer this year. There was bright sunshine and the temperatures were in the eighties Fahrenheit! Unfortunately Nathaniel hates heat and sunlight he wasn’t the happiest bunny. We passed the Museum Tavern on our way to the main gates and it was weird seeing it in the flesh so to speak as I’d been looking at it and the surrounding buildings only a few hours early on Google Maps Street view. It was like a strange kind of mapping Déjà Vu; actually it wasn’t but that sounded well cool innit.

Opposite the gates of the museum was the Starbucks café noted on google maps and I popped in to grab a few London Gift cards for Di’s niece Amanda (who works at Starbucks in Orlando and collects Starbucks gift cards from round the World) but the place was heaving with customers so we grabbed a handful later.

Before we entered the museum

Before we entered the museum we sat outside had something to eat and took a shed load of pictures. It’s certainly is an incredibly impressive building and I very much doubt we managed to see as much a 5% of the inside of it that day.  While it was awesomely impressive inside it didn’t fill me with the same excitement I experience when I visit the Natural History Museum or Science Museum. Perhaps if I’d been alone and had time to amble and take my time I’d have enjoyed it more. However, it seemed like every time I stooped to look and photograph Deb and Nat just kept on walking so I was always playing catch up and missed what was between the last photo and their current position.

Despite being an enormous building the place got hotter and hotter in part due to the body heat of the other visitors and partly because of the glass roof and the outside temperature and sunshine. Whatever the reason Nat was soon flagging, complaining about the heat and wanting to leave.

While he and Deb visited the gift shop in the central glass roofed area I did a quick tour around it, stopping for a moment to take a Chinese tourist’s photograph for her, before rejoining them and making our way outside.

We made it outside and while I took the opportunity to get a few more (a lot) photo’s Nat and Ded found them a wall in the shade to sit on. I joined them dumped the bags and while Nat cooled down went out of the gates grabbed the Starbucks cards and went and took some more photos of the local buildings and people. I managed to get a few nice pictures of the two local pubs but not the chance to grab a pint because, as usual, I was without funds of my own.
Note the strangely dressed pensioner sitting outside one of the shops. At first I thought he was a manikin until he moved!!!

I rejoined the others and was told we were making our way back to Saddlers. I was a little surprised by this news because it was only a little after 2:00 Saddlers was about 30 minutes walk away and we weren’t due to meet Deb’s parents until after 6:00. There seemed, at least to me, to be a slight between the time we needed to be back and the time we were going to be back. Whatever the reason, we started back, stopping only outside a tat shop for Nat and Deb to insert their heads into a cardboard cut out and for me to take a picture of them doing so.

Shortly afterward Deb to tripped over a curb stone and went sprawling down onto the pavement. While she tried to shrug it off, cover her embarrassment and carry on she was quite badly shaken and bruised the next day.  A kind passer bye rushed to help her up along with Nat and myself. Acrioss the road from here we stopped at an ATM got some cash and looked for somewhere cool to sit for a dring and/or something to eat.

Eventually we stopped at a pub serving Sunday lunch but upon discovering that lunch cost £12 a plate we decided just to have a drink and so I just had a pint of the local beer and they each had a diet coke so we only spent a mere £8.50 WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After nursing our drinks for as long as we could(NB I think I was the only person at the bar that paid in cash everyone else used a credit/debit card!!!)we set off agian for Saddlers. Evetually we reached the garden area opposit the theatre where the Angel statue

Big History and Kindle Readfing

A few weeks ago I downloaded, quiet by chance, a torrent from The Teaching Company's Great Courses entitled Big History and since then I’ve been attempting to listen to all 48 lectures which covers the Big History of the Universe, Galaxy, Solar system, The Sun, The Earth, Life and Humanity. The course is awesome but unfortunately I have been trying to listen to it in bed which means that despite my best intentions I have over and over again fallen asleep while listening. My excuse is I work nights and it’s difficult to remain awake the whole time and as I have the lectures as a playlist as one ends the next automatically begins. So for the last few evenings at work I’ve tried to listen when we are quiet but even that at times it’s difficult not to drift off because the lecture, Prof David Christian, has quite a soporific voice and much like Bill Bryson inadvertently lulls me to sleep. Well despite all these handicaps I’ve finally made it as far as the first Agrarian Civilization (Mesopotamia)  so I’m happy to say I’ve only another 13 lectures and an additional 4,000 years to go before I’m bang up to date. Of course at that point I’ll probably need to go back to the beginning and start again.

In a similar vein I downloaded a torrent of eBooks containing the New York Times Fiction and Non-Fiction bestsellers of June 2012 and again I’ve been pleased to discover a host of non-fiction books that I’m really enjoying reading. I just finished, this evening, Putin’s Labyrinth by Steve Levine  and I’m also reading the story of the mercenary group Blackwater: The Rise of The World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army by Jeremy Scahill , a book tracing the origins of the Anonymous organisation We Are Anonymous by Parmy Olson    and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

Hannah Goes To Brockington and Nat Goes to Lutterworth

Hannah today stated school at Brockington College
Brockington College is a C of E secondary school located on Blaby Rd in Enderby, Leicestershire. It is in the district of Blaby. The school is a specialist Technology College
The school has been rebuilt for £20m under the Building Schools for the Future scheme. Building started in September 2006, and officially opened on November 5, 2007. It has given a big impact on the surrounding areas.

The school council is also a big part of the school.

The school now has a full size Artificial Grass Pitch. The pitch is sponsored by the FA and local sponsors. It was completed at around the end of 2009.
It admits ages 11–14, being a middle school. It has about 800 pupils. It is a technology specialist school.

The Head teacher is Chris Southall.

It is next to Enderby Leisure Centre, and Danemill Primary School. The M1 is 500 metres to the east, and it is near the B582 Enderby Road.

 Alumni Richard Armitage, actor.
Geoff Peters, broadcaster and DJ.

Nathaniel started at Lutterworth College
Lutterworth College is a large 14–19 non-selective Upper School with a fully comprehensive intake, situated in the rural market town of Lutterworth in district of Harborough in the South Leicestershire countryside. A Specialist Technology and Applied Learning College and Church of England Voluntary Controlled school.
There has been a school on the site since 1880. Lutterworth Grammar School grew from a small boys’ grammar eventually into a large mixed comprehensive school in 1967. In 2006, Governors agreed to change the school's name to Lutterworth College. As the school has grown in size (from around 750 in 1967 to over 2000 today) the site has grown, but remains in its original Lutterworth location.
There are around 2100 students on roll, with around 800 of these being in post-16 education (over 70% of Y11 currently stay on post-16). Numbers are projected to be stable (between 2000-2100) for the next five years, according to the Local Authority. There are two main feeder 11–14 high schools (Lutterworth High School and Brockington College) and also a substantial amount from a third school (Thomas Estley Community College). The intake is above national average attainment, mainly rural Leicestershire (but with increasing numbers of Leicester City suburbs children) The full range of ability is welcomed into the college. About 1400 students come to school by school buses.
The last full Ofsted inspection was in November 2008, under the 2009 framework as a pilot inspection. Overall, the college was judged to be good in all aspects with some outstanding features. Part of the moral purpose of the college is to be judged as “outstanding” in all aspects during the next inspection.

Controversy

An article published by the News of the World newspaper under the headline "It's St. Sinians", on April 29, 2007, revealed that for the four years up to 2007, it handed out 345 morning-after pills to girls at the school. This ranked it one of the highest distributors in the country. The article was followed widely, and covered in the following days by newspapers including the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror. However the school defended itself in saying that it runs a "Strictly Confidential" service at the school, which allows students to meet a doctor in school time. The school faced especially strong opposition from pro-life groups, with the UK Life League even publishing the principal's home number and address and compelling people to protest outside it. They have since taken these down, citing that they had moved onto new projects. In the spirit of the school, the students maintained strong support for the head teacher, and the "Strictly Confidential" service.
It later came to light that the "Strictly Confidential" service offered by the school was in fact introduced two years before the current headmaster had begun working there. Furthermore, it was completely controlled by the local doctor's practice, not by the school. Students went on to form a Myspace page dedicated to supporting their headmaster, and hundreds of students signed up. This resulted in the anti-abortion groups' and newspapers' attempts to damage the school's reputation failing, particularly due to widespread local support.
In August 2008, Pat Schofield, an external examinations officer who works at the college, complained about Carol Ann Duffy's poem "Education For Leisure", describing it as "absolutely horrendous" due to its references to knife crime. Duffy responded by writing a poem entitled "Mrs Schofield's GCSE", highlighting the use of violence and stabbings in Shakespeare's plays. In response, Schofield said that she was "gobsmacked" and that she found the poem "a bit weird" as she found much of Duffy's poetry. Many of the school's students resented the decision to remove the poem (having the opinion that it was by far one of the most interesting to examine, and also one of the easiest to compare and contrast with) and felt that Mrs Schofield clearly had only a very basic understanding of poetry. The poem was then replaced.
