Vipers U15’s V Burton U15’s
After last weeks performance against Lutterworth we asked the boys for a better performance this week, the result didn’t matter the performance was more important, with three players dropping out on the morning it left us with 13 players as we took on Burton.
We played 13 a side, so there was plenty of space to play an open game, Vipers kicked off and were soon defending as the home side tried to batter their way through, but Vipers stood firm, it remained scoreless for about 10 minutes, but the action was fast and furious with some good drives from both sides, the home side took the lead with a well worked try down the right hand side with a 2 on 1 and the winger ran in the first try and they added the extras, vipers heads dropped a little and the started to drop passes and take their eyes of the ball, the home side scored their second try from a Vipers Line out which was slapped back from the 5m line and the home side ran through and dropped on it, the 3rd try followed soon after more sloppy play, but vipers replied with a try of their own from a scrum on the home 10m line, Vipers switched Nat and Jonny around in the scrum with Nat going to the base he picked the ball up and drove at the home side midfield but they couldn’t hold him, it took about 4 of them to get him down but didn’t hold him and allowed him to get back to his feet and drive again they managed to pull him down again just short of the line but he managed to wriggle over the line. We turned round 17 – 5 down.
We started the second half refreshed from the half time team talk and started to take the game to the home side, and Nat got his second try of the game when he went over from a ruck near the home line and Rory added the extras, we started to control the game but little errors were creeping and ill discipline was starting to hurt the home side as they started to concede penalties at the breakdown and we tried various different ways to try and score another try, but we turned the ball over near the home line and allowed them to run nearly the length of the pitch before Luke dragged their player down but they recycled the ball and we managed to turn the ball over on our line and tried to kick the ball away but instead the ball dropped and their player was first to react and scored a simple try under the post which they added the extras as well, this rallied the visitors who again took the game to the host’s and Nat scored his 3rd try of the game with Rory kicking the extras to leave us 5 points adrift, we put a great amount of pressure on the home side but couldn’t find away across the whitewash to lose an enthralling game of Rugby 24 – 19.
A lot of things to work on but the performance was much better than last week and better decision making and handling might have bought us better rewards, we gifted them two soft try’s, but we are on the right road, hopeful after Christmas when we get a full squad back we might be able to turn these tight game’s into wins.
