Stayin Awake Stayin Awake: The Zzzzz Gees

Oh My Sweet Lord what on earth is going on with me? I’ve worked nights since Nov 2004 and I’ve never fallen asleep during a shift until these last few weeks. Again tonight I’ve struggled to stay awake since 2AM and failed on numerous occasions to do so. I think using twitter was what enabled me to keep alert these last couple of years and now we don’t have access to this or any other social media just reading, either Kindle or online, isn’t cutting the mustard; after all, don’t people read in bed with a view to drifting off to sleep? Now I know my phone contract has ended when I contact T-Mobile tomorrow to cancel current arrangement I’m going to have to give thought to seeing if they can offer me a decent deal on a mifi dongle so that I can get on line at work via my Nexus 7 and once more tweet or chat with my virtual buddies.

Even while writing this I’ve had to take a break for a stretch and a yawn and this despite throwing cold water in my face less than 30 minutes ago. Dianne, in Florida, thinks I no longer want to talk to her but the truth is that even on my off days I’m now incredibly sleepy after midnight whereas before I could chat through the night into the early hours of the morning. Gonna have to go to bed Friday morning if I’m to have any hope of staying awake late enough to have a chat to her on Skype on Friday night.

Emailing: KCAC.jpg

The Kansas City Atheist Coalition was prevented from entering into and participating in the local St. Patrick's Day Parade this year. After the group applied, it received an email from the organizers of the parade, stating their denial was because,

“We are an Irish Catholic parade.”

This, in spite of the parade website stating that parade events are open to all, Irish or not, Catholic or not. The parade is privately run, so denying the group was not a violation of any laws. However, the group decided it would still be part of the community festivities by holding an 'Ask An Atheist' event.

Members of the group sported signs they made, and stood on a high-traffic corner to answer questions, hear complaints and even stand for payers offered by bystanders – showing that atheists are just as much a part of their community as everyone else.

Sarah Hargreaves, the KCAC President, stated,

“We just want to be treated the same as everyone else. There have been and are multiple organizations participating in the parade who do not explicitly line up with Catholic beliefs – the International House of Prayer and K-Love Radio being prime examples in the past. We want to engage in respectful and civil discussion about atheism while also bringing attention to the parade organizers’ discriminatory actions.”

According to a story filed by the Religion News Service, participants in last year's parade included the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, Bob Hamilton Plumbing, the Kansas City Sheltie Rescue, and Pepsi Beverages Co., which are all secular organizations.

The Kansas City Atheist Coalition's website states that their goal was to keep the signs 'light and friendly.' Some of the signs read:

  • “Why am I not in the parade? Ask me,”
  • "Kiss me I’m an Irish Atheist”
  • “Dear God, do leprechauns go to Heaven?”

The group also handed out small toy dinosaurs, dinosaur temporary tattoos and toy compasses to passing children for the purpose of promoting science.

Hargreaves said that some passers-by gave high-fives and fist-bumps, while others shouted “I believe in Jesus Christ!”

OMG I’ve Gotta Do Something to Stay Awake.

Oh well I've now discovered what the long term effect has been of withdrawing access at work to any and all social media or chat sites: I'm falling asleep!!! Yep, I'm becoming like my fellow team members and succumbing to the lure of The Sandman now I no longer have Twitter and sundry to keep my mind occupied on quiet nights.

It's really kicked in the last couple of shifts and I've found it almost impossible to stay awake. I've even fallen asleep when I've been sitting up straight trying my best not too so moment it put my head back and deliberately close my eyes, even for a second, I'm doomed to slip immediate into the arms of Morpheus.

It's weird because since 2004  when I started nights I've never, unlike others, gone to sleep at anytime during my shift but now, now the precedent has been set, I'm as bad as everyone else. The even weirder thing about doing this is that it doesn't seem to make one any less tired; no, on the contrary I'd say that, when I get home, I feel even more tired than I usually do. It seems that writing a blog entry like this one does appear to have a countervailing effect but if that's the case I'm gonna have to go back to writing nightly and having to think of something to write. It was hard enough before when I could write about the kid's activities but they have now reached those ages where I rarely get told was it is they have been up to. I'll have to quiz Nat for more details relating to his weeks work experience and Hannah about what she actually does at these Youth Council meetings she attends. It's also gonna be a struggle getting back into a routine of writing a thousand words cos this little narrative has stretched to a mere 321 in total… Unless, of course, I now decide to exercise my creative juices and simply write whatever comes into my head so as to stretch out this moderately wordy missive until I reach a certain n umber of words and can reclassify it as a rather wordy missive if not a lengthy one. Unfortunately, this project is somewhat hampered now as we have started taking calls and that interferes with ones chain of thought and just then lead me, additionally, to accidently terminate the caller as I was distracted by what I'd been trying to type. Oh well still managed to stretch this to a more acceptable 427 words.

X-Men Comics

DID I IMAGINE THOSE XMEN … WAS IT A DREAM???

I think I may well be delusional as not only do I have memories of long distant running I never did but in addition I seem to have memories of  not buying issues of the x-men comics that I distinctly remember missing which don’t seem to have ever been published. Even now the memory is sharp even if the details of the issues are blurred and I well remember looking at them in comic shop that doesn’t exist! I can’t recall which x-men they were for some reason the more I try to envisage the covers that were once so sharply etched on my brain the more faint they become but the memory of them remains strong. They are chasing or being chased by horrendous villains that have committed a slaughter on a par with the Morlock mutant massacre chronicled in the 1980’s issues in X-men 214 onward.

blog

Blog Sunday 2 March

Oh well Dave’s Leicester comedy Festival is well and truly over ending last Sunday 24 Feb. I had hoped to attend more events but was stopped by circumstances beyond my control. One was the weather which yet again turned nasty during my off-days and, additionally, over the last weekend I lost Friday and Saturday night to illness which meant it wasn’t possible to book off Sunday in order to attend an all day event at the Funhouse on the last day. However considering that I’ve never before managed to attend a single event in all the years since it started in 1996 I think going to two different venues and seeing a total of EIGHT different comedians wasn’t too bad a start. Well the die is case and so there’s no excuse to not go to more next year assuming I’m OK. Why that codicil? Well I went to the Doctor’s surgery to have my blood pressure monitored (first time in a while and part of scheme to try and get advice on regime to eliminate this recurring cold) and unfortunately turned out to be much higher than expected. The upshot is that I have an appointment this coming Wednesday morning to have my bloods taken (fasting from midnight!!!) and an appointment to see the Doc the following Thursday.

Anyway, apart from a few odd days, I’ve not smoked since the New Year, and Deb and I are taking Monty for fairly long walks most morning so the plan to get fit for Florida has started. Now have to cut down on the beer and go on a diet to try and rid myself of this awful belly I seem to have just noticed that I developed. Got a sickness review meeting schedule for sometime this morning with Leon which I’m not looking forward to; businesses obviously need to keep a close eye on sickness but I don’t think most of the time they appreciate the negative effects this monitoring actually has on their staff. When you are sick things are made worse because of the anxiety about employment this causes. You return to work not well and looking forward to jumping back into the game but rather apprehensive about what’s going to happen during the interview and what constrains are going to be placed on you on this occasion. You go through a year of worry terrified to take a day off however bad you feel and then when you’re through that probationary period and relax al little you are infected by whatever nasty bug is going round the call centre this winter and before you know it the whole sorry process starts again. Its soul destroying!

Di’s down in Naples (Florida), spending time with her kids before jerry gets deployed to Afghanistan, so I keep receiving pictures via WhatsApp showing me where they are and asking me if I remember this place or that; I do.
